lexoffice
lexoffice is now called Lexware Office. The provider (Haufe-Lexware), your login, and the feature set all stayed the same, only the name changed. The range is broad: invoicing, accounting, banking, payroll. The product is sold in four packages (S, M, L, and XL). There is no permanently free plan, but there is a 30-day trial.
Strengths:
- Accounting, payroll, and invoicing on one platform (payroll as an add-on module)
- Strong DATEV export
- Integrated banking
- Large customer base and mature software
Weaknesses:
- Many features that freelancers don't need
- Can feel complex if you only want to write invoices

Who Actually Has to Issue E-Invoices?
Receiving applies to everyone: since 1 January 2025, every business in Germany must be able to accept e-invoices. An email inbox is enough for that, no particular software required.
Issuing is phased in:
- From 2027: Businesses with more than 800,000 EUR in previous-year revenue must issue e-invoices for B2B transactions.
- From 2028: The issuing requirement applies to all businesses in B2B transactions.
- Exemptions: Invoices to consumers (B2C) and small-amount invoices up to 250 EUR are not affected. Kleinunternehmer under §19 UStG are permanently exempt from issuing e-invoices but must be able to receive them.
For most freelancers and solopreneurs that means: important, but not yet urgent. It looks different if you invoice public authorities or larger companies. They ask for XRechnung or ZUGFeRD today, regardless of what the law requires of you.
revoBill issues e-invoices in XRechnung format, with no volume cap and at no cost. ZUGFeRD is not currently included. That is unusual in this table: sevDesk's free plan stops at three invoices a month, Lexware Office needs at least package M, Papierkram at least package S, and Billomat and FastBill have no free plan at all. Which Tool Fits You?
The decision depends on what you need:
You have to issue an XRechnung? All six can, but on different terms. revoBill produces XRechnung for free and with no volume cap. sevDesk and FastBill include e-invoicing on every plan, though sevDesk's free plan caps you at three invoices a month. Lexware Office needs at least package M, and Papierkram at least package S.
You need ZUGFeRD instead of, or alongside, XRechnung? Then revoBill is out, since it only produces XRechnung. The other five cover both formats.
You want everything in one tool: invoicing, accounting, banking, DATEV? sevDesk or lexoffice are the obvious choices. Both offer a large feature set. sevDesk stands out for usability, Lexware Office (formerly lexoffice) for payroll, which is bookable as an add-on module.
You need a proven invoicing tool with an API? Billomat is the solid pick, especially if you need custom integrations.
You want invoicing plus receipt capture? FastBill combines both in a clean interface.
You want to start as cheaply as possible? Papierkram offers a free entry point with basic features and built-in time tracking.
